Claiming Balance Through Travel: A Lesson in Living Fully

I used to believe balance was something I would finally “get to” once the hard work was done. I told myself, when the life slows down, when the family doesn’t need me as much, when the to-do list is shorter… then I’ll travel, then I’ll rest, then I’ll breathe.

But decades slipped by, and I realized I had traded “someday” for “never.”

It wasn’t until I found myself single, a little older, and quietly aching for the experiences I had postponed that I understood balance doesn’t arrive gift-wrapped at your doorstep. You have to go out and claim it.

Learning to Wander Smart

When I finally packed a bag and gave myself permission to step away, I was terrified. Terrified of the unknown, of being alone in a foreign country, of admitting that I’d waited too long. But what I found was that the world isn’t waiting to scare you—it’s waiting to welcome you.

Simple moments reshaped me: sipping tea on a terrace in Barcelona, watching sunrise prayers in Cambodia, sitting in silence with women who didn’t share my language but shared my longing for connection. Each place taught me that “wellness” isn’t just spa treatments or smoothies—it’s listening, slowing down, and being present in your own skin.

The Spaces That Heal

What surprised me most was how certain spaces themselves seemed to restore me. A courtyard filled with birdsong. A room designed for both solitude and conversation. A retreat that encouraged journaling instead of endless itineraries. These weren’t just escapes—they were classrooms in how to live with more gentleness.

Lessons I Carry Home

I’ve learned that:

  • Travel can be the teacher you didn’t know you needed.
  • Balance doesn’t happen by accident; you must create it.
  • Connection often blooms when you’re farthest from what’s familiar.

Now, when I speak with other women who whisper that it might be “too late” for them, I remind them—if you can still wonder, you can still wander.
